Obinna Oleribe was trained in the United States (Harvard, John Hopkins, & Walden Universities), Nigeria (Universities of Port-Harcourt, Benin, and Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu), Cyprus (University of Nicosia), and several other institutions across the world. He has a background in Medicine (MBBS), with advanced degrees in public health (MPH & DrPH), business administration and health management (MBA), and project and quality management (PMP & Six Sigma). He is also a fellow of the West African College of Physicians (FWACP), Lagos, Nigeria, and the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP), London, UK. His areas of concentration include leadership and management, public health practice, project management, and implementation science.
His pedagogical foundation draws from multiple approaches: critical inquiry and pedagogy; and experiential, problem-based, and community/group learning. He has spent the last decade-plus designing, leading, and managing public health systems in the United States, Nigeria, Tanzania, and the United Kingdom. He also spent a significant amount of his time consulting for major national and international organizations: World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, BroadReach Consulting Group, Nigeria Institution for Medical Research, National AIDS Control Agency, Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, London, Royal College of Physicians, London, Family Health International, IntraHealth LLC, Health System Development Foundation, UN Foundation/eHealth Africa, etc. He worked briefly with the Klamath Tribes, Oregon, and Orange County, California leading health programs. Since 2009, he has taught graduate courses in the Nigerian and Tanzanian Field Epidemiology Training Programs, the University of Port Harcourt Center of Excellence, and South Wales University, UK. He teaches public health, leadership, and management at California State University, Dominguez Hills, and Yo San University, Los Angeles.
In 2018, he redefined health to give it a more practical and functional meaning and co-authored a text on health leadership and management with experts in the health space. In 2020, he proposed the Deliberate-Proactive Leadership Style to give leaders new tools and skills to minimize firefighting and improve leadership outcomes.
He is an African and has authored over 50 scientific articles. His books are translated into multiple languages and used in nations across the world. Most of his research works are on health systems. Obinna loves to teach, mentor, exercise, read, and write.
